ROMsets approaches production like a puzzle, piecing together fragmented elements to create worn-out soundscapes, deconstructed drum patterns, and broken sounds reminiscent of an arcade junkyard. Starting with forgotten game machine samples and drum machine oddities, he meticulously manipulates a ‘bleep’ or background noise into unexpected textures and offbeat musical phrases. This exploration of sound is rooted in a love for the unconventional: while respecting club culture, ROMsets removes its context entirely, creating something both unique and underground.
The Welsh-born, Manchester-based producer began his journey in the experimental music scene, drawing inspiration from vintage video games that would go on to shape his signature sound. His debut on Machine Woman’s Take Away Jazz Records in 2021, the off-kilter EP Faultys, was well received and earned a spot on Mary Anne Hobbs’ 6Music show as part of her Techno Tuesday feature. This marked the start of a growing catalog on his own [non]Optimal imprint, which has since gained recognition from respected figures such as Hobbs, Kai Campos (Mount Kimbie) and Laurent Garnier, further solidifying ROMsets’ position as a forward-thinking, boundary-pushing artist.
